Arts Month in St Pete

St Pete Arts Month

St Pete Arts Month

September is St Pete Arts Month

From cocktail operas to grand openings, this year’s arts month in St Pete has plenty of events to choose from to experience the art scene first hand. St Petersburg is rich in culture and fosters growth of local artists from musicians to muralists. In honor of arts month we want to shine the spotlight on two of our favorite artists in the Tampa Bay area, Michael Vahl and Cam Parker.

Michael Vahl

Michael Vahl

Michael Vahl

Michael Vahl is a visual artist born and raised in Los Angeles, California. He specializes in portraiture and other unique styles of artwork. Drawing since the age of 5, Michael is consistently learning his craft, honing his skills to produce works of art for the enjoyment of others.

He decided to leave his life behind, including friends and family, to pursue his dream of being an artist here in Tampa Bay. He has dedicated himself to visual art and is constantly aiming to learn new methods and skills that his clients and viewers will appreciate and love for years to come.

You can find his work all over St Pete and Tampa, including the above Dali mural piece in downtown St Pete. You can learn more about Michael and request quotes for commissioned pieces on his website, and follow his latest work on Instagram and Facebook.

Cam Parker

Cam Parker

Cam Parker

Cam is an energetic, imaginative fine artist and illustrator based in Tampa, Florida who attended Northern Illinois University as a painting major and fashion minor. He gathers influence from Lady Gaga, Frida Kahlo, Alexander McQueen, and pop culture. Cam works to create sarcastic, electrically charged vision of all things pop culture. His work is dynamic, catching the eye with bright colors in contrast with present day messages of inclusion, equal rights, and a splash of fierce fem edge.

He mixes media challenging himself to marry pen and ink with colored pencils graphite, blending acrylic and spray paint and immersing myself in digital manipulation.  Commission portraits, large scale paintings, murals and tattoo designs are among his favorite things to produce. You can follow Cam’s work on Facebook. He is available for commission works on various amounts of media.

You’ve no doubt heard of brewery tours if you’ve spent any time in St Pete, Florida. You may have gone on the mural tour as well. But do you know about the new kid on the block? St Petersburg Craft Coffee Tour is getting tons of attention in the media and for good reason.

Founder Brendan Smith has a history with coffee. He has held multiple positions in the coffee industry from barista training to coffee shop manager. “In 2015 I was having coffee with my friend, Ariel Penu, when she asked me about all the craft coffee shops in St. Petersburg. There were so many new shops! She suggested the idea and I quickly organized the first #StPeteCoffeeTour for my friends. We did it again 6 months later and 6 months after that I lead my first public tour (December ’16.)”

And so the tour was born. St Pete Craft Coffee Tour offers Saturday morning and special afternoon tours throughout the St Pete area, making stops at locally owned and operated establishments like Craft Kafe, The Bikery, Southside Coffee and more. You’ll learn about roasting, the craft of making coffee and coffee drinks, and sample everything from espresso to tea.

Don’t skip on this awesome new way to explore St Pete, Florida. You can book a tour on their website through the next few weeks. Make sure to also like them on Facebook for all the latest updates.

Staycation in St Pete Labor Day Weekend

Labor Day weekend is coming up and it’s time to make your three day weekend plans. Getting out of town with only three days can make for a rushed, less-than-relaxing time. Our recommendation: a staycation in St Pete. A staycation is just what it sounds like. You stay in your home town (or nearby) and do all the vacation things. Below are our recommendations to make your staycation in St Pete a blast.

Where to Stay

The Avalon Hotel is location at 443 4th Ave N, a few blocks or a short ride with their free shuttle service to everything Downtown St Pete has to offer. This boutique hotel has an art-deco,

trendy feel with friendly, upbeat service and cozy rooms. The building was erected in the 1930’s, but has recently gone under a full renovation, keeping all the old charm and architecture and mixing in the hip-ness that is the heart of the Sunshine City.

Other things to note:

-Each room has free Wifi for those who don’t want to totally disconnect

-King or queen size beds available

-Free ride and pool, free parking, and restaurant with taproom at their sister hotel The Hollander (located next door)

-Check-in is 3pm, check-out is 11am

What to See

Go to the Saturday Morning Market and enjoy music, food vendors, and local makers. The market has been going strong since 2002 with over 170 near Al Lang Stadium with beautiful waterfront views not too far away. Come early to beat the heat, get some breakfast (or lunch!), and enjoy music presented by Mahaffey Theater.

Check out The Dali Museum. On Saturday, September 2 starting at 11:45am, take the kids to DillDally with Dali and on Sunday at 10am, all your yogis will love Yoga at the Dali.

Stroll down St Pete’s famed Central Ave where you’ll find The Chihuly Museum at Morean Arts Center, coffee shops like Brew-D-Licious, and tons of local shopping on the 600 Block.

What to Eat

There are no shortages of food option when stay in Downtown St Pete. We recommend The Galley for sandwiches, great seafood and overall gastro-pub feel.  Locale Market has options for everyone including the pickiest of foodies. Locale is located within The Sundial courtyards and is surrounded by shopping options and movie theater. For the beer adventurers, you should stop into St Pete Brewing, Cycle Brewing, and Ale and the Witch to taste what the locals drink (and some special taps from out of state).

Bring The Noise: The St Pete Pier Is Coming

Construction begins on the new St Pete Pier.

Construction begins on the new St Pete Pier.

The New St Pete Pier

The ceremonial ground breaking on the St Pete Pier has come and gone and now comes the tough, not-so-pretty part: noise pollution. Remember when the One building started? It was (and is) an ear full of ground pounding, crane engine running, and metal clanking throughout the east side of downtown. We can expect more of the same starting next week as construction starts on the new St Pete Pier.

What does this mean for you?

ABC Action News reported that over 400 piles are going to be drilled by the crew through January to support the weight starting in September. But test piling will start on July 17th, which will be bringing the noise to Beach Drive and Old Northeast. According to NewStPetePier.com, construction should end in late 2018 and the official ribbon cutting in “early 2019”. That’s a lot of noise.

The pier looks to be an amazing build, though. There will be multiple gardens, play areas, music venues and room for shops restaurants. It sure looks pretty, at and a cool $14 million estimated cost it ought to be. Will the end result be worth it? Sure looks that way from the renderings. It will be interesting to see how the noise affects businesses nearby that have outdoor space. In the mean time, there are events like Pier Beer Summer Series. This even will connect the booming brewery scene and education on the pier and it’s progress.
